DURHAM (WTVD) -- Several agencies are investigating a double fatal crash on Patterson Road in Durham County that began with agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration operating a narcotics investigation.

It all started when the DEA needed the Durham Police Department's help in pulling over a suspect. Not long after, that suspect ended up in a very violent wreck.

Video from the scene showed the Durham Police Department, Durham County Sheriff's Office, the State Highway Patrol, and DEA swarmed around the crash site. Officials said the crash was not the result of a chase.

Durham police said they were asked to pull over a black Chevy Impala on N.C. Highway 98 for the DEA investigation. Police said the Impala did pull over, but then sped off.

Officers said the suspect then crashed head-on with another car. That second vehicle, presumably driven by an innocent driver, was mangled in the wreck. That driver was transported to the hospital where she later died.

Police said the suspect driving the Impala was killed on impact.

The DEA will only say the incident is an ongoing investigation.

ABC11 crews on the scene saw piles of money scattered around the suspect's car, but police kept us from filming it.
