Two bitten by rabid fox in Smithfield
Residents are worried there could be more

SMITHFIELD, NC (WTVD) -- A fox that bit an animal control officer and a resident in Smithfield on Tuesday has tested positive for rabies.

It happened near Highway 70 West (Market Street) and Hill Street.

The animal control officer attempted to capture the fox and was bitten. The animal got away. Later, a resident was bitten in the same area.

The second time, the fox was captured and destroyed.

The two people exposed to the fox are getting treatment.
