'Hero' valet captured on camera using gun to stop stabbing attack
WARREN, MI -- A parking valet is being hailed a hero after he pulled a gun during a stabbing attack in Michigan last Wednesday, but the move put his job in jeopardy.
It all started last Wednesday when police say a woman was being attacked by her own daughter, Chavonne Taylor, outside the GMC Tech Center in Warren. A portion of the attack was captured on video, including when Didarul Sarder pulled the gun.
Investigators say Taylor came to the stadium and asked for her mom and then stabbed her repeatedly outside the stadium. Video shows the moment when Sarder stepped in, raising his gun and ordering the woman to stop. She dropped the knife.
Sarder, who has a license to carry his gun, is being called a hero, but the move almost made him lose his job, as the stadium and valet company have a "no gun on property" policy. Sarder says he was told not to come back to work after the stabbing, but was reinstated this week.
Warren Mayor Jim Fouts honored Sarder with a proclamation, saying without his help, the woman who was attacked likely would have died.
Fouts said, "When someone is a hero, you don't punish them, you don't threaten them with termination, you honor them for doing the right thing."
Sarder says even if he would have lost his job, he would have done the same thing again.
Sarder, who is Muslim, told TV station WXYZ, "We don't look at who is black, who is white, who is Christian, who is Muslim. Someone needs help, you help them. You know, it doesn't matter -- religion, race, anything, we're all here as a community, and we should all look out for each other."
