Victim in brutal downtown Raleigh beating speaks out

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A Wake County man was left bruised and bloodied in the street after he was jumped in downtown Raleigh. The victim tried fighting back against the suspects, but says he was outnumbered.

The attack happened last weekend as he left on bar and was walking down Davie Street near Chavis Way with two friends.

He asked to remain anonymous.

"I got hit so hard I saw stars. It's just like a flash, you can't think straight for a bit," the victim said.

He was knocked out cold at one point. The victim says four or five people threw him to the ground and were standing over him kicking and punching. He took repeated blows to the head.

The victim said, "When I was down protecting myself, they just keep hitting in the back of the head."

Thankfully, a woman driving through downtown rolled up on the attack. She slammed on the brakes and called 911.

The Good Samaritan told the dispatcher one of the men was "killing him . . . someone needs [to be] here fast."

The 911 call put an end to the vicious beating and may have saved the victim's life. As the Good Samaritan was on the line with a dispatcher, the men took off running.

"She saw other cars drive by like it was nothing and she stopped," he said.

The victim says his attackers were in their late teens to mid-twenties.

They didn't steal any cash or valuables, but they did leave him battered. Almost a week after the attack, the victim still has a bruise and scrap on his face.

He is now worried this will happen to someone else, who like himself, wanted to go out and enjoy a night on the town.

"I'm angry with the police. They could be doing so much more to prevent this. They could have cops walking around on the beat," he said.

Police told ABC11 officers pay close attention and often patrol this area, as well as other neighborhoods in the city.

The department is investigating the attack and working towards making arrests.
