What Twitter's New Birthday Feature Means for You

Twitter wants to celebrate your birthday -- if you're so inclined to let the world know it's your big day.

A new option unveiled this week allows a user to share their birthday with targeted audiences including the public, a user's followers, and a more select group where "we follow each other."

Another option lets users enter their birthday but opt to not share it with anyone.

Before basking in the birthday love, it's worth considering what is at stake. Giving up an extra piece of information can make you more valuable to advertisers or potentially be used by scammers to gather more information about you, Robert Siciliano, an online safety expert to Intel Security, told ABC News.

"The data might not be sensitive, but it can be used to gather additional sensitive information or in some cases be used to socially engineer either you, or a company you do business with," he said. "Beware that when adding this data to the public web, you are providing an additional way for advertisers to sell you to or a nefarious person to scam you."

If a chorus of happy birthday tweets still sounds like a great way to ring in another year, you can add your birthday by going to the "edit profile" option on Twitter and adjusting the privacy settings to your liking.
