Meals on Wheels of Wake County has had to suspend meal deliveries since Tuesday due to the weather.

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- The winter weather is putting the brakes on some community outreach programs that help feed our elderly neighbors.

To protect volunteers and staff, Meals on Wheels of Wake County does not deliver food when Wake County Schools cancel classes due to inclement weather.

The school district has been closed since Tuesday.

Food is now piling up in the kitchen waiting to be delivered.

More than 1,300 homebound or disabled elderly residents in Wake County depend on these meals daily.

100-year-old Betty Langley is one of them.

Her daughter, Claira Moore, helps care for the Wake Forest woman.

In Meals on Wheels' absence this week, the women have been eating food stored in their freezer.

"For older folks like me it's hard getting around, you know, can't go nowhere, can't do nothing but stay in the house," said Moore.

Meals on Wheels of Wake County has more than 2,200 volunteers.

Many of them have been making calls this week to check on clients.

"You know the situation. You know they're not getting the hot meal, and you're hoping they're using the emergency meal that we brought, but you don't know," said volunteer Bob Starkes.

Meals on Wheels provided clients with an emergency meal late last year.

The organization hopes to resume deliveries on Monday.
