RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A 17-year-old girl hit by a car while crossing Capital Boulevard died Saturday at WakeMed. Her mother says she was 26-weeks pregnant.

Camisha Vines, from Greenville, was hit by driver Sheila Johnson. Johnson did stop after the accident and spoke with ABC11 about the teen's passing.

"I am so sorry," said Johnson, as she was crying over the phone. "It was dark out...I didn't see her walking."

According to a police report, Johnson had the right of way and was going through a green light when she hit the girl. The crash happened by Calvary Drive.

"It's sad though, it is," said Raleigh resident LaToya Davis. "It's a tragic thing."

Vines' stepfather says she suffered multiple injuries, including a broken neck.

Her mother says she had a tough time believing her daughter was not going to make it.

"They told us that she was pregnant and the baby's heartbeat was good, but she's really in a messed up situation," said Shea Bridges, Vines' mother.

It is the second pedestrian accident at the intersection in about a month and a half. Edward Dean Trice, 50, was seriously hurt in September.

Folks who live and work nearby say it is a dangerous area to walk across.

"I wouldn't cross the street myself at all," said Davis.

"Cars are kind of crazy," said Raleigh resident Dave Lucas. "You just have to be careful."

Raleigh police have released their calls for service in a one-year time span. There have been more than 270 accidents with injuries along Capital from the Beltline to 540. Drivers say you need to be extremely alert traveling the roadway.

"Not even just at nighttime, during the day too," said Raleigh resident William Shaw. "It's just a busy street."

"When people tried to cross the street and cars are turning, you kind of have close calls with cars and trucks," said Davis.

Raleigh police are still investigating the accident. So far, no charges have been filed.

Vines' family says they're considering legal action against the driver.
