It happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. along Knotty Elm Loop. Fayetteville police officers went to a report of shots fired in the area of Knotty Elm Loop and Bending Birch Lane in the Lafayette Park Subdivision.

When FPD officers arrived, they found the two victims. One was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured man was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.

Police are conducting a homicide investigation.

The names of the victims are being withheld until their immediate families can be notified.

There's still no word on who fired the shots or what exactly happened. Police say they are actively investigating and interviewing community members in hopes of someone coming forward with new information. One resident told ABC11 he is considering moving out of the neighborhood because of the uptick in crime.

"It's time to go, man. I got kids in the family," Dennis McMillan said. "This is reckless. I mean, sometimes they shoot, but it's never been a murder."

Anyone with any information regarding the homicide and shooting is asked to contact Detective J. Littlejohn with the Fayetteville Police Department at (910) 818-3468 or Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477).
