LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (WTVD) -- A U.S. Iraq War veteran risked his life to save a stray dog.

Aaron Schneider ran across three lanes of highway traffic when he saw a dog hit by a car on I-470 East in Lee's Summit, Missouri.

Schneider says he was determined to see the dog survive after seeing so much loss overseas at war.

"I'm just compassionate. I love animals, and to see an animal get hit, I'm going to do everything I can. Saving a life is saving a life. It doesn't matter if it's an animal or a human," Schneider said.

The staff at Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners named the beagle Buster, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Schneider says he intends to adopt Buster once he is discharged from the hospital.
