104-year-old Durham woman casts her vote
Catherine Ferrell

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Catherine Ferrell lived through the Great Depression and remembers a time when African Americans faced widespread discrimination at the polls.

She grew up in Warsaw with very little. She worked as hired help while trying to graduate high school at the same time.

These days, she's active in the community and votes in every election. But she remembers a time when that wasn't possible because of the color of her skin.

"When we could not vote you had to accept anything and everything that was put out towards you, but now you have a chance where even if you don't win all the time, you have a chance to fight," she told ABC11.

Ferrell is an inspiration to generations in her family. She made sure her granddaughter registered to vote and encourages her to succeed in school.

Ferrell attended several local political rallies and said she support Clinton.

When it came to voting on Tuesday, she walked out of the poles with a smile. She urged everyone to go vote.
