FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- The political sparks started flying on Thursday as the candidates for Fayetteville mayor met publicly for the first time this election season.

Incumbent Nat Robertson and challenger Val Applewhite are no strangers. They faced off back in 2013 and quickly picked up where they left off.

The debate was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Both candidates said they have the ability to run City Hall. The candidates also said their top priorities are crime, public safety, the economy, jobs, and the city's growing homeless population.

Robertson is running for reelection on his leadership and experience.

"It was this city council this past year that recognized that we have to do something with homelessness and we have to do it at a city and county level," Robertson told the crowd.

Former city council member Applewhite is also running on her leadership and ability. She says the city can do better.

"Leadership is key. Transformational leadership that brings vision and bold ideas to this community is how we win," Applewhite said.

At the public debate, the two sparred over more and better jobs, economic development, public safety, and taxes.

"I was really impressed with a lot of the answers that came forth," said community activist Troy Williams. "I believe that people have some good strategies, it all depends on who they decide to vote for."

The big disappointment was the lack of turnout for the debate, as only about 50 people showed up. However, there are several more debates scheduled before the Nov. 3 election.
