RALEIGH -- A small group turned out at the State Capitol Thursday afternoon voicing support for Confederate monuments.

The rally came as the state House of Representatives is set to consider a bill to prohibit the removal of any state-owned monuments, memorials, or works of art without the direct approval of the legislature.

That would also apply to confederate monuments, which is just fine with N.C. State student Jonathan Riggs. He set up the small rally on the capitol grounds to voice his opinion that monuments are markers of history to be learned from, not lost.

"There definitely should be a proper channel and protections so things won't be taken down on a whim," said Riggs.

Senate Bill 22 is scheduled for a full vote on the House floor next Tuesday.
