RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to allow Thomas Crowder's wife Kay to serve the remainder of his term if he is forced to step down.

Crowder is battling testicular cancer and has exhausted all methods of treatment.

He said he would continue to serve as long as his health permits.

Crowder is serving his sixth consecutive term on the Raleigh City Council representing District D.

Crowder was supposed to take over as mayor pro tem in January, but following his announcement, Mayor Pro Tem John Odom motioned to give up the remainder of his time as pro tem so Crowder can take over immediately. City Council voted unanimously earlier this month to make Crowder the new mayor pro tem.
