FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A small group gathered outside the Cumberland County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon to protest same-sex marriage.
About six or seven people at a time protested and carried signs. They were also talking to people who were going in and out of the building.
The protesters are from different denominations. They are pastors and elders and other church members of various churches around Fayetteville and outreach ministries, who said allowing same sex marriage is not right and they say it is an abomination to God.
"I think it [the protest] is very much needed because now we are at a time where our voices have to be heard. We have gotten to a place where a lot of times things are not being said," said Pastor Roe Jones. "We need to stand consistently with the word of God, which we should do. Now, we have, in our society and even in our communities, we are thinking this is something...that's OK, and God is not pleased with this. This is not something that is OK."
The Cumberland County Register of Deeds told ABC11 that they have issued about 22 same-sex marriage licenses so far.
Organizers say Tuesday's protest is part of a growing movement across the country involving African-Americans pastors and their congregations. The pastors are continuing to preach against same-sex marriage in the pulpit.
Many advocates of same sex-marriage said that unfairly influences some of the members, but the preachers say they are just doing God's work, and they don't plan on stopping.
