DURHAM (WTVD) -- Interim Durham District Attorney Leon Stanback said Friday he will retire as of August 31.

Governor Pat McCrory has agreed to appoint District Attorney-Elect Roger Echols as the new District Attorney.

In a news release, Stanback said he wants to thank the people of Durham County for allowing him to serve for the last three years.

"District Attorney-Elect Echols has been outstanding in his performance as Chief Assistant District Attorney during my tenure," said Stanback. "I've been fortunate to have been able to work with the hardworking District Attorney's staff that ably represents the State of North Carolina and the victims of crime in Durham County. I also want to thank the Durham County Sheriff's Office and the Durham Police Department for their close working relationship with my office during my tenure."
