A year after losing arm, cake artist as good as ever
WAKE FOREST (WTVD) -- One year ago today, a local cake artist lost her arm in a freak accident.
She never thought she'd be able to decorate cakes again after the ATV she was riding rolled over on her, crushing her arm.
But a year later, Kaylyn McGuyrt's wedding and groom's cakes are being featured in a photo shoot for Southern Bride and Groom magazine, a local publication that by invitation only, features the best of the best in the wedding industry.

"If you had asked me a year ago if I'd be here today, I'd have said no way," McGuyrt said. "My family was in survival mode a year ago."
She credits her family for her amazing progress. And that includes, her boss at Sweet Traditions bakery in Wake Forest, Leane Boksleitner, who never gave up on her.
"I owe Leane my entire comeback," McGuyrt said. "She believed in me when I didn't."
"She's family," Boksleitner said.
McGuyrt also credits an incredible piece of technology called the i-limb for her amazing progress. She also has a new silicone cosmetic arm.
"Honestly, I was dreading this day, because it comes with sadness over what I did lose, but I'm proud of how far I've come," McGuyrt said.

McGuyrt is back at work three days a week and has also been invited to a special retreat for amputees this fall.
The retreat is hosted by Bethany Hamilton, the professional surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack in 2003, whose true-life story was portrayed in the movie "Soul Surfer."
