Young orangutan gets bullet removed from shoulder
The animal's health has improved since the operation.

A baby orangutan is in better health after having a bullet removed from its shoulder. The animal had been shot likely by the same gun that killed his mother.

Didik had been in the care of the International Animal Rescue (IAR) in the United Kingdom since June. The severely malnourished animal was in too poor of health to operate on, according to the organization.

After weeks of treatment, the veterinary team determined that Didik's condition had improved enough to finally remove the bullet from his body. While the animal has gone through a traumatic experience, the IAR says that Didik's health has already taken a turn for the better since surgery and has already started learning how to climb.

"Didik looks very handsome now," said Veterinarian Ayu Budi Handayani. "We are still treating the skin where the bullet entered his body but it is healing beautifully."
