Buddy Walk raises $100k+ for those with Down syndrome
HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. (WTVD) -- The 18th annual Triangle Down Syndrome Network Buddy Walk took place Sunday afternoon at Sugg Farm Park in Holly Springs.
The event was rescheduled after Hurricane Matthew flooded parts of the Triangle last month.
More than 1,200 people registered for the fundraiser, raising more than $100,000.
All proceeds will go toward local programs for people living with Down syndrome and their families.
"A lot of these families don't have the chance to just go out and have a good time and share their experiences with people who can relate to what they go through," said TDSN President Jerry Higgins.
Team 'Strollin' for Sadie' was the top fundraising team this year bringing in nearly $10,000.
It was the first time for the team walking in honor of 9-month-old Sadie Callahan.
"Since day one it's just been a huge blessing to us. We had a birth diagnosis and really had no idea what to expect," said Sadie's mother Sarah Callahan. "We're overwhelmed and humbled, and we're just so grateful that we've had support from our family, our friends, our co-workers, neighbors. It's been amazing."
ABC11's Heather Waliga served as emcee for the event again this year.
Her family started Cassie's Crusaders in 2010 in honor of her younger sister, Cassie.
