FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Some happy children are back home in the Sandhills after a trip on the "Snowball Express."

They are families of post-9/11 service members killed in action who get a vacation each year at Christmas.

Families said this is one time a year that they see their children smiling and happy.

Applause and squeals of laughter greeted the Snowball Express passengers at the Fayetteville Airport Monday night.

This was the ninth year the kids were treated to an all-expense paid party in north Texas. They were among thousands of children from around the country treated to concerts, shows, and even a rodeo.

A lot of the kids said they will spend the rest of their lives remembering this past weekend. It won't take away the pain in their hearts, but for a few days, it helped ease it.
