Durham Salvation Army out of food, in crisis mode
The Salvation Army in Durham says it's running critically low on food and needs donations now.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- The Salvation Army in Durham is in desperate need for donations for the food pantry. Staff says the need is bigger than the supply and the stockpile is about to be wiped out.

"There are things that we really need to be able to provide to folks," said Capt. Anthony Juliana from the Salvation Army. "Hunger doesn't take a summer vacation."

In the last year, there has been a 30-percent increase in food assistance. Recently, staff has seen a surge of single moms asking for help to feed their children, who are now home for the summer and no longer getting subsidized meals at school.

"Now moms having to do three meals and so they're coming in saying we have this family, we need to feed the family," said Juliana.

Around 200 families turn to the food pantry every month. Pearl Ward is among them. She has a full-time job and receives food stamps but says it's still not enough to put food on her table.

"It's not really all that easy, not for none of us who are on a fixed income," Ward said.

The Salvation Army is hoping a generous community will help right now fill grocery bags with items neighbors less fortunate need.

"We don't want to say to anybody, umm I'm not going to be able to do that today...check back with us in a week or so. We'd like to be able to meet that need," said Juliana.

If you are interested in making a donation, you are asked to drop it off at either of the Salvation Army's locations in Durham: 909 Liberty Street or 3167 Hillsborough Road.
