RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Drive past the Helping Hand Mission on Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh and you'll see a small army of volunteers led by Sylvia Wiggins, busily stuffing backpacks with donated school supplies.

They're working hard to prepare for Tuesday's annual Back to School Drive and they still need lots of donated supplies.

"Small calculators, spirograph pens, pencils, planners, extra notebooks, and a composition book for every class they have to change," said Wiggins.

She said the need exceeds the supplies now on hand.

"Oh my God, we are so far behind! So many people have been calling, talking to parents. We need enough for 600 kids, over 600 kids. That's the minimum. The bare minimum."

That's 600 sets of school supplies and backpacks to meet the Helping Hands goal by Tuesday.

Wiggins said the mission is open until 7 p.m. Sundays, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

After hours donations can be made at New Bern House, located at 501 New Bern Avenue.
