OC man runs 100 miles in 24 hours to raise money for kids with cancer
ORANGE, Calif. -- For the second year, Roy Wiegand is running 100 miles in 24 hours to help raise money for children fighting cancer.
Wiegand hopes to raise $25,000 in Roy's Run for Christopher. Wiegand's son and Christopher were in the same Boy Scout troop. He died more than a year ago from a rare cancer.
"People get intrigued, they come out to help, they learn about what the foundation does we're raising money for, the Michael Hoefflin Foundation," Wiegand said. The non-profit offers financial and emotional support to children with cancer and their families in the Santa Clarita area.
"To honor Christopher and his memory and to keep that spirit alive was so infectious," Christopher's father Joe Wilke said.
Roy's Run for Christopher will end with a small parade in Burbank around noon Saturday.
Wiegand says it's a tough race, but it puts everything in perspective.
"Makes you appreciate your health. Hug all the healthy people at home and the sick ones, take care of them," Wiegand said.
