RALEIGH -- North Carolina's State Archives is asking residents to donate their military items so they can be preserved and made available to the public.

Matthew Peek is the military collection archivist who says such records and materials extend beyond items related to combat or training. For example, the State Archives is interested in letters written to or by a service member. Maps, photographs and print-outs of social media posts also are of interest.

The archives' military collection includes items from colonial days to the present.
