FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- More than 3,000 Sandhills families received Christmas gifts through the Salvation Army of Fayetteville and its supporters.

The group's annual Christmas giveaway took place Monday, as people wrapped around a Ramsey Street warehouse for gifts, including bikes, electronics, puzzles, and books.

Volunteers were assigned families in need through the Salvation Army's Giving Tree, located in the Cross Creek Mall. The giveaway supported families in Cumberland, Hoke, Moore, Scotland, and Robeson Counties.

"With five kids and the economy the way things are, it's very hard out here," said Charlene Davis, a gift recipient. "You know, for families and people to come together at a time of need, it's the greatest thing that you can have."

Salvation Army leaders said Monday that they've seen a 20 percent increase in need from last year to this year. They used $45,000 to supplement the giveaway, and support families that had not been adopted. They said it's a friendly reminder of how important kettle drives and foundation support are throughout the entire year.
