Underage drinking costs NC $1.3 billion and 2 lives a week
As college students return to campuses across the state, officials are focused on preventing underage drinking

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- North Carolina ABC officials estimate underage drinking costs the state about $1.3 billion a year and an average of two lives a week.

So as college students return to campuses across the state this fall, they're focused on how to reduce those numbers.

Tuesday, ABC commissioners from Wake County and the state gathered on the NC State campus to talk to business owners about serving alcohol, not only to teens, but how much they sell to of age customers.

There were also tips and instructions given on how to spot fake IDs.

The initiative is by the Governor's Substance Abuse and Underage Drinking Prevention and Treatment Task Force, along with law enforcement agencies, the ABC Commission, DMV License and Theft, local ABC Boards, and the TeenFest prevention coalition.
