Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps pleaded guilty to DUI charges on Friday, AP reports. Phelps, 29, had been arrested on Sept. 30 after leaving a Baltimore casino when he was stopped for speeding and crossing the double yellow line.

The legal limit is .08 percent in Maryland. Phelps was sentenced 18 months of supervised probation, but will be able train and travel during that time. Phelps will continue alcohol counseling for at least six months.

Police say Phelps registered a .14 percent on a blood-alcohol test during his arrest in September. The legal limits is .08 percent.

The officer who interviewed Phelps noted that the swimmer had been driving 84 mph in a 45 mph zone. The officer noted in his report that he smelled alcohol in the car and on Phelps' breath. The officer's report also stated that Phelps' speech was "mush-mouthed" and his eyes were bloodshot.

The officer also noted Phelps seemed "disoriented and argumentative" when placed under arrest and asked to take a sobriety test. Phelps previously has one DUI arrest in 2004.

"I'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself . . . swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future," Phelps wrote on his Twitter account in October.

"I recognize the seriousness of this mistake . . . I've learned from this mistake and will continue learning from this mistake for the rest of my life," Phelps said in October following his arrest.
