South Granville Vikings celebrate 2 State Championships
The South Granville Vikings celebrated winning two State Championships in Creedmoor on Thursday.

CREEDMOOR, N.C. (WTVD) -- In a parade celebration that shut down Main Street in Creedmoor Thursday, South Granville High school's softball and baseball teams were honored in true victors' fashion for their pair of state championships.

"(It is) crazy. We won, and it was like, 'Whoa,'" said Vikings softball senior Karlee Michalina. "I've had silver three times (in state title games). So I'm ready for some gold!"

"Former players have come by and said, 'Thanks, (we) appreciate it,'" said Vikings softball Head coach Jackie Day.

"We're such a close knit community, and they all support our sports so much," said Vikings baseball player Jordan Harris. "They're really more excited than we are."

This season's win over Forbush marked the first softball state title for the Vikings since 1998 and the Vikings baseball team's win against Randleman helped the school capture its first-ever baseball state title.

"My third year (coaching) and getting that state championship - it's hard to do in baseball - and to do it this year with these seniors. It means a lot," said Vikings baseball Head coach Curt Watkins.

The 2A state champs accomplished a feat even bigger, though. With both teams' wins, South Granville became just the fourth school in North Carolina history to win both a baseball and softball state title in the same season.

"To me it feels like we put Creedmoor back on the map," said 2A baseball state finals MVP Justin Brown. "People know that we've got stout baseball and softball teams, and hopefully next year we'll do the same thing."

Fresh off their wins, now the Vikings teams say they want to face each other for bragging rights in a winner takes all game.

"The guys were like, 'Alright let's do it, but we don't want to hit it too hard,'" Michalina said. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me?'"

"I say bring it on, and let's do a little slow pitch softball on the big field and let's see how they do," Brown said.

With their competitive spirit, both teams aren't backing down anytime soon.

"We were in sandals for the celebration, and we were all texting parents like, 'Bring tennis shoes, bring cleats, bring gloves,'" Michalina said. "So we're ready."
