CHAPEL HILL (WTVD) -- The North Carolina Tar Heels football team will start the 2014 season ranked #23 in the Preseason USA Today Amway Coaches Poll.

UNC was picked by the media to finish fourth in the ACC Coastal Division, behind Miami, Duke and Virginia Tech, but the Tar Heels are the only team among those four to make the Top 25 poll.

"The Tar Heels aren't in a bad place in the ACC - which is to say they're not in the Atlantic Division where Florida State and Clemson live," the poll says. "As such there opportunity is there to move up, but key spots on both sides must be filled. WR Quinshad Davis could be the breakout start of the offense if either QB Marquise Williams or Mitch Trubisky can excel in the starting role. T.J. Logan paces a deep backfield. The versatile Norkeithus Otis will do a little of everything from the bandit position on the defense."

UNC last appeared in the Preseason Coaches' Poll in 2010, at #18. The 2010 season was consumed by scandal when the NCAA began investigating and interviewing players about possible rules violations concerning sports agents and improper gifts.

UNC finished the 2010 season 8-5, but was forced to vacate the wins as part of NCAA sanctions handed down as part of the agent investigation. Butch Davis was fired as the Tar Heels head coach in July 2011.
