Fayetteville gets upgraded app to help fight crime
FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Fayetteville is one of the first cities in the nation to use an upgrade of the NextDoor App which lets residents share what's happening where they live.
It's a way for police to fight crime virtually at the speed of the Internet.
"So if there is an issue like a crime trend, a problem we will be able to reach out and poll the neighborhood, find their what their recommendations are or suggestions, and share information that the department is involved in," said Police Chief Harold Medlock.
Police say about 9,000 residents already use the neighborhood blog, nextdoor.com. People can use it to warn each other about problems and to post notices.
With the new polling feature, police can send out alerts to specific neighborhoods, question residents and get answers and feedback on crime and other issues.
Officers think the program will let residents feel more comfortable sharing information and passing along tips and concerns through the internet.
Medlock says the app also allows the department to be transparent with their operations. The app and the service are free.
