Wake Tech looks into the future
Wake Tech says they're looking 30 years ahead on Back to the Future day

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- October 21, 2015 - it's the day the day Marty McFly and Doc Brown time-traveled to in the 1985 movie "Back to the Future." Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh says they are also looking 30 years ahead.

Wake Tech teaches classes in 3D-printing, smartphone app building, and food truck management. They also have a "Future Forward College," where they encourage virtual classes and a highly individualized curriculum to prepare students for things that have yet to be created.

"We're not in lock-step anymore," Benita Budd, Future Forward College fellow, said. "We're using technology wisely to help students get ready for jobs that haven't been invented yet."

While there are no commercially-available hoverboards or flying cars, Wake Tech President Stephen Scott says a lot of the technology we have today is close to the vision of 2015 presented in the 80's film.

"There are Google Glass - I'm sure you've seen people using Google Glass, which is very similar," Scott said. "And of course most of your audience has used some kind of teleconference, though you don't call it that. You call it Skype or you call it FaceTime. There it is in your pocket. That you can FaceTime, basically with anybody on the planet that has an Internet connection and another smart phone - hey, that is the future."
