It happened about 5:45 p.m. on Highway 421 near Russ Drive, not far from Campbell University.

The students were identified Thursday morning as freshman Judson Reagan of Roxboro and freshman Brandon Punzalan of Wilmington.

The university said the crash may have been weather-related.

"Campbell officials ask for prayers for the family and friends of the students and for patience as the Sheriff's Office continues its investigation," the school said Wednesday evening. "Counselors, chaplains and ministers are available to meet with students who would like to speak with someone."

The Highway Patrol is investigating.
