A state trooper was injured in a multicar wreck on I-40 in Durham.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- The Highway Patrol is investigating a multi-car crash involving one of their own that shut down a stretch of I-40 westbound near Exit 280, Davis Drive, for several hours Wednesday night.

It happened around 7 p.m.

Investigators said a trooper was parked in the shoulder investigating a previous accident when a tractor-trailer coming up behind attempted to move left. The truck sideswiped a car, causing it to hit the trooper's car.

The trooper's car was then pushed into another car from the previous accident.

The back bumper on the Highway Patrol cruiser was smashed in, and the back window was shattered.

The trooper was taken to Duke University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the car that hit him was taken as well and was listed in serious but stable condition.

The trooper was seated inside his vehicle at the time of the collision. No other injuries were reported.

The Highway Patrol said charges are expected in the incident.
