Heads up, drivers - yet another lane shift along I-40
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Your commute will once again look different Tuesday morning if you travel through the Interstate 40/440 work zone.
Overnight, North Carolina Department of Transportation workers opened new lanes and shifted traffic.
The shift covers about a half mile along westbound I-40 in southeast Raleigh near the I-440 split, and also at the ramp from Rock Quarry Road onto I-40.
The alteration was supposed to happen last Friday night, but got put off because of the weather.
The changes are part of the Fortify I-40 project to improve the interstate.
Last month, crews shifted the westbound lanes of I-40 at Lake Wheeler Road (Exit 297) to west of the Avent Ferry Road bridge. Weeks earlier, the DOT opened newly rebuilt lanes along east and westbound I-40 near Gorman Street.
All traffic over the 8 1/2-mile length of this section of the project should be on the new inside lanes by early fall.
DOT officials say drivers should slow down, obey the 60 mile-per-hour speed limit and watch for construction signs. You will face an additional fine if caught speeding in the work zone.
They are also warning drivers to expect delays as people navigate the new traffic pattern.
