RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Your commute will look different starting Tuesday morning if you travel through the Interstate 40/440 work zone.

Crews opened newly rebuilt lanes overnight along eastbound I-40 near Gorman Street.

The new lanes are part of the Fortify I-40 rebuild project.

Crews have been putting down layers of asphalt and new lane markings to prepare for the lane shift.

It means drivers will move to the inside lanes from just before Gorman Street until Lake Wheeler Road, which makes up a nearly 2-mile stretch of the interstate.

In the next couple of weeks, drivers in the westbound' lanes of the same area will be shifted.

In June, there will be another shift.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says drivers should slow down, obey the 60 mile-per-hour speed limit and watch for construction signs.

They are also warning drivers to expect delays as people navigate the new traffic pattern.
