RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Maintenance crews were out early in preparation for the winter weather heading toward the Triangle.
Salt brining was done around the area. The NCDOT said they started with highways, main roads, bridges, and overpasses because the storm is supposed to start with sleet and ice.
Brining the roads is only effective if the temperature is in the low 20s or colder. Brine, a mixture of salt and water, lowers the freezing temperature of water to about 18 degrees. It also prevents snow from compacting or binding with the road.
According to Scott Hecht, Cary's Public Works Director, they are well-stocked with brining materials because of the mild winter the Triangle has experienced so far.
The Highway Patrol is also preparing for bad road conditions.
"Despite a rather mild winter so far, North Carolina's weather can often change from one day to the next," said Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Jeff Gordon. "It's important that we monitor this weather system and plan accordingly."
The Highway Patrol issued some safe driving tips for the inclement weather:
-Avoid travel unless necessary during bad weather.
-Decrease your speed.
-Leave early-allow yourself time to get to your destination, and expect delays along the way.
-Increase your distance between cars, especially when the roads are icy.
-Clear all windows on your car before you start to travel.
-Charge your cell phone and bring a blanket in case of an accident or emergency.
