Two separate crashes involving utility poles caused a traffic headache in Durham on Friday

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Authorities are investigating two accidents after cars crashed into two separate utility poles in Durham Friday morning.

Just after 10 a.m., a vehicle hit a power pole on Fayetteville Street between Riddle Road and Buxton Road.

The intersection was closed for several hours, but has since reopened to traffic.

Officials said it was a single-vehicle accident. A man heading home from work lost control of his car and crashed into the power pole.

The pole and a fence kept his vehicle from crashing into nearby homes. There were no reported power outages.

Eyewitnesses who knew the driver said he fell asleep behind the wheel.

"He works two jobs, and he was on his way back. I don't think he's been to bed at all," said eyewitness Jerry McClain. "Actually, he don't remember anything about the accident."

Our crew on the scene said the driver walked away from the crash unharmed. His name has not been released.

Around the same time, three people were taken to the hospital after a car hit a pole at the intersection of Hillsborough Road and 15th Street. The cause of the accident and the victims' conditions have not been released.
