RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A State Highway Patrol trooper was involved in a crash on Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh late Monday afternoon.

It happened just before 6 p.m. when Trooper Jack Thorpe was responding to a call for a group of motorcycles driving recklessly.

When Thorpe arrived, he attempted to make a traffic stop on a dark red sports bike. As Thorpe activated his lights and sirens, the motorcyclist fled northbound on Lake Wheeler near Interstate 40.

Lt. Jeff Gordon said as Thorpe approached I-40, a vehicle attempted to turn onto Lake Wheeler Road off of the westbound I-40 exit ramp into the path of the cruiser. The trooper then veered to the left and avoided impact with the vehicle before striking the median.

At last report, Thorpe was in good condition at WakeMed.

The driver of the motorcycle was last seen traveling on Bloodworth Street near downtown Raleigh. The operator is described as a black male, weighing approximately 280 pounds, and was wearing black vest with a white unknown insignia.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact the Highway Patrol at (919) 733-3861.
