Woman charged with DWI after state trooper injured on I-95

A North Carolina Highway Patrol officer was hurt Monday after being hit by his squad car when he stopped to investigate a wreck.

It happened about 4:30 p.m. on I-95 between mile marker 49 and the rest area in Cumberland County.

The Highway Patrol said a 2013 Nissan slammed into the rear of his stopped patrol car. The trooper identified as N. M. Oxendine was thrown several feet in the air by his own cruiser and landed on his back on the side of Interstate 95.

Tooper Oxendine was out of his car, and was hit by his cruiser as it spun around after being hit.

Authorities say a tow truck driver, who was not in his vehicle, was also struck by the cruiser. He was identified as Daniel Chapman, of Fayetteville. Chapman was not hurt.

The Highway Patrol said the driver who hit the patrol car - 50-year-old Katherine Caroline Humphries - was charged with driving while under the influence.

Humphries, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., was also charged with failure to reduce speed, driving with no license and expired registration.

Oxendine was taken to Cape Fear Hospital for treatment.
