Hundreds ran on Thursday for the memorial of runner Derek Davis

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. (WTVD) -- Hundreds of Triangle runners hit the streets Thursday evening in honor of a Holly Springs father who was hit by a car.

Runners laced up their shoes to pay tribute to Derek Davis, who was struck by a vehicle that ran a light at the intersection of Holly Springs Road and Linksland Drive on April 20.

The run started at 6:30 p.m. All week, runners have been adding their sneakers to the growing shoe memorial.

One of the most amazing things about Thursday's run is that most people in the group didn't even know Davis.

News of his death spread through the running community, and now runners are coming out to show support and raise money for his family.

"He's one of those angelic human beings," friend Josh Brammer said. "His mother-in-law said he would miss his own funeral just to go on a run."

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Davis's family. You can visit the page here.
