Cleanup underway in Fayetteville after devastating rains
FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Days after historic flooding ravaged Fayetteville, cleanup is just beginning for many businesses and people.
Medical Arts Pharmacy off Murchison Road is a mess after the flood swept through - destroying everything. Christina Washington with the pharmacy said medical equipment and thousands of dollars of prescriptions had to be thrown out.
"We didn't know if was going to rain 9 or 10 inches," she said.
Officials estimates nearly a foot of water in some parts of the county. Dams and roads washed away Wednesday night.
Rushing water swelled into creeks, rivers, homes, and businesses.
Johnson Mill Restaurant and Tavern had to close indefinitely and the owner is shocked.
I've been here 13 years - I've never seen it like this. Never," said the owner, Mike Alojeil.
Saturday, Congressmen Richard Hudson and Robert Pittenger, along with city leaders, toured the damage.
"Now we need to determine if this raises to the level where we need to ask the president for a declaration so we can bring FEMA in," Rep. Hudson said.
It's help the community says it needs as they begin to dry out. Emergency leaders are hoping to avoid any potential impact from Hurricane Matthew still at sea.
Hudson and Pittenger advise residents and neighbors to call their district office if they are in need of assistance.
