Monster waves rocked the coastline of Hawaii in late February.

On Feb. 22, 2016, the North Shore of Oahu experienced waves as high as 70 feet, marking the strongest surf to hit the island in 50 years.

According to officials at the NOAA, the size of the swells may be due to El Nino.

Ocean Safety Lieutenant Adam Lerner told Hawaii News Now it was one of the biggest swells he's ever seen.

"I tell everybody it was extra, extra large," he said.
