HOUSTON, TX (WTVD) -- NASA just released two stunning videos this week captured by the International Space Station 4K camera.
Hues of blue and green dance along the surface of the earth. The high definition video was captured on board the International Space station. A series of time lapse shots showcase the beauty of the Aurora Borealis and the Aurora Australis. The Aurora Borealis is only visible in the northern most latitudes, which explains the nickname, "northern lights."
The Aurora Australis is visible in the southernmost latitudes, like Antarctica, Chile and Australia.
Both auroras occur when electrically charged electrons and protons in the Earths atmosphere collide with neutral atoms from the upper atmosphere, and the result is breathtaking.
The same 4K camera captured these crystal clear images of Earth. You can see clouds, desert ground, and large bodies of water vividly.
Although the ISS takes stunning pictures, crew members spend most of their time monitoring the earth's vital signs. The ISS travels at a speed of five miles a second, orbiting the Earth about every 90 minutes.
