DURHAM (WTVD) -- The American Red Cross is running a 2-day hurricane disaster drill across North and South Carolina Friday and Saturday.
"North and South Carolina are situated in a precarious position on the east coast for hurricane and tropical storm activity," explained James Jarvis, Public Information Officer for the Cape Fear. "We can't predict a disaster, but we can be prepared for them when they happen."
Volunteers and Red Cross staff practiced moving people and equipment to places where they could be needed when a storm hits.
In one scenario Friday, they worked on opening 30 shelters to help people displaced by a storm surge.
Every year, the Red Cross responds to thousands of disasters across the country big and small - from home fires to major floods.
