Scatted, strong storms hit northern Triangle counties
It was a noisy night across parts of central North Carolina with strong storms packing thunder and lightning, heavy rains, and winds.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- It was a noisy night across parts of central North Carolina with strong storms packing thunder and lightning, heavy rains, and winds.

A severe thunderstorm watch expired at 11 p.m. Saturday. There were more than 15 storm warnings issued throughout the evening.

Much of the severe weather was confined to areas from Wake County and north.

A large tree fell onto two houses on Pine Drive near Knightdale in eastern Wake County around 8 p.m. It also hit one homeowner's vehicle. No one was injured.

Counties near the Virginia border were also especially hard hit by the storms.

Remnants of moisture from what was Tropical Storm Bill approached the region from the west and passed mainly to the north. Some of that moisture triggered the thunderstorms across the region. A southwest flow also kept the humidity high across the Triangle.

Before the fast-moving storms arrived in the Triangle, they sliced through the Charlotte area -- causing damage and power outages. High winds even tore off part of the roof on the downtown Kannapolis YMCA.

Temperatures will climb back into the middle and upper 90s across the region on Sunday with sunshine and little chance of any thunderstorms.

The heat wave looks to continue through at least the middle of next week with only isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
