Troopers: Driver fled after crashing into ambulance
Troopers say a driver crashed into an ambulance, causing it to flip over. The driver then fled on foot.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Three Franklin County EMS workers are rushed to the hospital early Sunday morning after Highway Patrol says a driver slammed into an ambulance. The driver took off running after the accident.

The crash happened on Capital Boulevard near Falls of Neuse Road.

Highway Patrol says the driver tried to make a left turn and hit the ambulance as it was heading south on U.S. 1

The ambulance had significant damage, the grill was smashed in and a chunk of the roof was ripped off.

The workers were on their way to WakeMed Hospital and transporting a patient at the time.

Authorities say after the driver hit the ambulance, hopped out of his car, and fled on foot leaving behind his Nissan Sentra. The car has been impounded.

A K-9 unit from Wake Forest was brought in and canvassed the area trying to find the man.

Other EMS crews were called to the scene. One was to bring the original patient to the hospital. The three workers also were taken to WakeMed. They are expected to be okay.

There have been no arrests.
