CHARLOTTE -- A man charged in the death of a Charlotte college counselor has been extradited to North Carolina after being arrested in Nevada.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department tells news outlets that 28-year-old Matthew Thomas Benner was moved to the Mecklenburg County jail Monday evening.

Benner was booked on charges of first-degree arson and murder after police say he killed 27-year-old Amanda Strous and set her apartment on fire. Authorities believe he may have been stalking her.

Benner fled North Carolina after Strous' June 18 death. Deputies in Nye County, Nevada, arrested him near Las Vegas on June 20 after detectives from Charlotte traced a signal from his cellphone.

Officials say Benner confessed to the slaying but a defense attorney says the confession may not be enough to convict him.
