ABERDEEN, North Carolina (WTVD) -- A 55-year-old Aberdeen man died at the scene of an accident after being struck by an SUV while crossing US Highway 1 on Monday evening.

The accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Magnolia Drive in Aberdeen when the man was crossing the busy highway with a walker.

Both southbound lanes of US Highway 1 in Aberdeen were closed to traffic for an extended time while the accident was investigated.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene of the accident and was being interviewed by law enforcement officers.

The victim has been identified by officials as Joseph Dwane Schoolcraft of Aberdeen.

Police have not yet said whether any charges will be filed.
