Deputies are talking to family members and area residents, gathering information about the case. While deputies processed the scene and looked for clues, McMillan's relatives gathered around the sheriff's mobile command center crying, hugging and wondering why something like this happened.

Family members were too distraught to talk, but one relative called the murder "senseless."

Coats also confirmed that McMillan was shot in the back of the head. He did not say in what room of the mobile home his body was found.

"They came to check on him, and that's when they found him," Coats said. "We are treating this as a homicide now. He had a gunshot wound to the head."

Friends and relatives comfort each other as deputies conduct a homicide investigation in Spring Lake.

Deputies got a call about 12:50 p.m. reporting a body inside a trailer on Gordon Lane, Coats said.

One resident told ABC11 that she heard a loud bang about 6 a.m., something that sounded like a "shotgun blast."

"The information we have is someone said they heard a gunshot sound this morning around 6 this morning, I think," Coats said. "The deputies have canvassed the area, and that's how we have found out what we know so far."

The sheriff told ABC11 that the victim did not live in the trailer but was a "frequent resident" there.

Law officers have not discussed any possible suspects.
