Red Cross opens shelters for Irma evacuees across North Carolina

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- As Hurricane Irma approaches, the Red Cross is opening shelters to house evacuees in North Carolina.

"Red Cross workers are providing meals, a safe place to sleep, and emotional support for those who have fled Hurricane Irma and found themselves in North Carolina," said Mary Donny, Red Cross disaster relief job director in North Carolina.

Shelters will open on Saturday in the following counties:

Henderson County

• East Henderson High School - 150 Eagle Pride Dr., East Flat Rock. Open at 7 p.m.

Gaston County

• Gaston County Resource Center -1303 Dallas Cherryville Highway Dallas. Open at 8 p.m.

Mecklenburg County

• JM Alexander Middle School - 12010 Hambright Rd. Huntersville. Open at 5 p.m.

Johnston County

• 912 N. Brightleaf Blvd. - Smithfield. Open at 7 p.m.
