Hillsborough, North Carolina (WTVD) -- The Town of Hillsborough says that businesses may be making some changes to outdoor seating areas along some sidewalks.

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners passed ordinance amendments on Monday that require business owners to apply for a permit for outdoor seating on public sidewalks on the newly widened North Churton Street.

Additionally, the board passed more specific requirements for the display of merchandise on public sidewalks, the town said.

The town advised that business owners displaying merchandise on the sidewalk should follow the new requirements immediately, while the town will begin enforcing the requirements for outdoor seating on Jan. 1, 2018.

The revised ordinances are intended to help businesses be successful while maintaining a clear pedestrian sidewalk path, the town said.
